ChatGPT, Non-English Languages, and the AI Revolution
Computer scientist Pascale Fung and a global community of AI researchers are raising concerns about the limited language capabilities of AI systems like ChatGPT.
The dominance of English and Chinese in available training data further compounds the language bias in AI systems. Despite some improvements, such as Google's efforts to increase non-English training data for its language model PaLM 2, the majority of consumer services still prioritize English, limiting access and usability for non-English speakers.
The black box of the PaLM
This article from Slator discusses a new paper from Google that explores how bilingual signals can aid in the translation capabilities of the Pathways Language Model (PaLM), a large language model. The researchers analyzed the training data of PaLM and found that a significant portion of bilingual instances were not translations but rather code-switching, references to named entities, or unrelated content. Only a small percentage of training instances contained translated pairs.
The language industry is well ahead of the curve
According to a survey conducted by Slator, one in ten language service providers (LSPs) have already conducted pilots or developed beta integrations using LLMs, and over 90% plan to incorporate LLMs into their business operations. LLM applications with the most potential in the industry include machine translation, quality evaluation, and business workflows.
Additionally, LSPs are exploring the use of LLMs for generating original content in multiple languages, which presents both disruptive challenges and opportunities for the industry.
