ChatGPT-4, Bard, Google, and the challenges of AI interpretation

AP | Portugal - Tech Language Solutions' content curation not only aims to disseminate knowledge, by embracing this important role, we also take the selection of the best and most valid content in multiple areas very seriously.

GPT-4: What you need to know

The highly anticipated update to ChatGPT was released by OpenAI, with immediate access available on Microsoft's search engine Bing Chat and a waiting list opened to developers. The updated ChatGPT-4 is a large multimodal model, meaning it can generate text responses, as well as accept images and text inputs from users — an improvement over predecessor GPT-3.5, which only accepted text.

Since its launch in November, ChatGPT's popularity has surged as traffic to the site hit more than one billion visits, up from 616 million in January, according to Similarweb estimates.

GPT-4 is more creative and less likely to invent facts

OpenAI says new model GPT-4 is more creative and less likely to invent facts. Calling it “our most capable and aligned model yet”, OpenAI cofounder Sam Altman said the new system is a “multimodal” model, which means it can accept images as well as text as inputs, allowing users to ask questions about pictures.

The new model is available today for users of ChatGPT Plus, the paid-for version of the ChatGPT chatbot, which provided some of the training data for the latest release.

GPT-4 is, in some ways, better than ChatGPT

Some people go see the sequel and declare that it is as good if not even better than the original. Others might have extraordinarily high expectations and after viewing the newer film proclaim it as reasonably good though nothing to howl ecstatically about.

In brief, just like a sequel to a movie, GPT-4 in some ways is better than ChatGPT, such as being larger, faster, and seemingly more fluent, while in other respects raises additional and pronounced qualms (I’ll be covering those shortly herein). A bit of a muddled reaction. The sequel is not a slam-dunk, which many had anticipated it would be. Turns out that things are more nuanced than that. Seems like that’s the real world we all live in.

Bard could very well dethrone ChatGPT

Google may be late to the chatbot party with Bard, but it could very well dethrone ChatGPT. With natural language chatbots like ChatGPT gaining popularity, it was only a matter of time before competition ramped up. Google’s Bard AI is a rival chatbot designed to complement the company’s search engine. Bard is based on Google’s LaMDA language model, which is similar to ChatGPT’s GPT-3.5.

But what exactly separates Google’s Bard from the other ChatGPT alternatives you can use today? Here’s everything you need to know.

Google turns 25 this year

Google, founded in 1998 by a pair of Stanford PhDs, turns 25 this year. But what kind of a company has Google become over a quarter of a century? The obvious answer is that the company has grown huge—its worth is more than $1 trillion, it employs more than 150,000, and it now does everything from self-driving cars to fiber-based phone service to robotics.

But a series of events effecting the company in 2023 alone, including a major layoff and a panicked response to ChatGPT, suggest that the search giant has changed in some more fundamental ways.

The challenges and possibilities of AI interpretation

While AI may be able to perform some tasks traditionally carried out by translators, it is unlikely to fully replace the role of human interpreters in the near future.

This is the starting point of an article published on Multilingual's website that addresses the transformations generated by Artificial Intelligence in the translation and localization world.
