Face-to-Face Interpreting is still necessary

It is a fact that Remote Interpreting is becoming a popular service, but as for translation companies, we need to remember that Face-to-Face Interpreting is still necessary and in many cases the only option.

“Face-to-face interpreting has been replaced by phone and video interpreting in many cases over the years, but there are a number of situations where it remains irreplaceable. In some settings you can’t accept anything less than the human presence of an interpreter, or sometimes a whole team of them”. Both phrases can be found in a text called 5 Scenarios Where Face-to-Face Interpreting is Needed”, on Globalization & Localization Association website, which reflects the reality coming from the increasingly digitalized world that represents one of the biggest challenges that the translation companies sector is confronting.

It is a fact that Remote Interpreting is becoming a popular service, but as for translation companies, we need to remember that Face-to-Face Interpreting is still necessary and in many cases the only option.

In this regard, Globalization & Localization Association (GALA) compiled “5 Scenarios Where Face-to-Face Interpreting is Needed, where it refers, in a generic but accurate way, to cases which imply Face-to Face interpreting:

  1. “When Language impacts the law” - courtrooms especially
  2. “When Language Impacts Business Results” - high-stakes business meetings can’t have any misunderstandings
  3. “When You’ve Got Something Important to Say” - employees should understand their safety and health instructions
  4. “When Language Impacts a Person’s Rights”
  5. “When the Human Touch is Important” - the human touch shouldn’t be underestimated, some cases involve personal and sensitive issues.

Essentially, whenever misunderstandings could impact a person’s life or wellbeing, face-to-face interpretation should be used.
