Content Curation

Trends for post-covid world, digital transformation, and a wrong Amazon’s tweet. Come inside and read

AP | Portugal Tech Language Solutions' content curation not only aims to disseminate knowledge, by embracing this important role, we also take the selection of the best and most valid content in multiple areas very seriously.

Information remains a powerful weapon, even more, in the circumstances around the world these days.

Geography fail? Localisation will save us

An Amazon support member trying to help a subscriber on Twitter was apparently not fully up to speed on world geography when they suggested to the user that Northern Ireland wasn’t part of the United Kingdom.

“I suspect the person who tweeted the “we don’t have the rights” tweet was possibly American or based in the US because they spelled “apologize” with a Z. The follow-up tweet spells “apologise” with the S, which is how it’s typically spelled in other English-speaking countries (including the UK)”, writes Kim Lyons in this article from The Verge.

Northern Ireland is indeed part of the UK, which actually stands for The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Students of 20th-century history may recall that the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 ended decades of political violence in the region. The Republic of Ireland (generally referred to simply as “Ireland”) is a separate country.

Digital transformation is a must

How we work and how we live are being fundamentally altered with the pandemic impacting businesses globally. And to thrive in the new normal digital transformation is a must. But isn’t it a huge challenge for many businesses? Can the digital world fill the chasm to thrive in the post-pandemic world?

COVID-19 has forced organizations to reevaluate, redesign and reprioritize in order to manage their response and recovery. There is a huge impact on the way we do work. Remote Work is the new norm. Organizations that lack structured digital workplace capabilities suffer significant remote work problems, such as inadequate equipment and infrastructure, inaccessible applications and information and ineffective working practices. Hence, digital transformation is a must, and the initial shock of mandatory remote work is now over.

Remote interviewing

This unprecedented moment in the tech industry (and the economy at large) might prove the perfect time to address long-term shortcomings in the interview process. Remote interviewing can become an extremely fair way to evaluate candidates, and contribute to companies creating even more diverse workforces.

But that still doesn’t eliminate the specter of bias during the hiring process, especially the interview rounds. With the pandemic forcing everyone to work and interview remotely, it’s worth asking what it’ll take to ensure that as much bias as possible is eliminated from video interviewing and remote testing.

Tech innovations and opportunities

Virtual working and coronavirus-linked workforce transformations have ushered in some massive tech innovations and opportunities. Consequently, corporate leaders should keep an eye on the trends aimed at swiftly adapting to tomorrow's norms.

Case in point: Teleconferencing--predicted long ago by Bill Gates, has risen as an acceptable alternative to professional meetings and casual hangouts. As a result, Zoom's busting at the seams and adding new perks and amenities. And who could deny that many employees and companies are now seeing remote work with fresh eyes?

From the pungent scent of a cigar to the gentle fragrance of roses, smells can transport us to days gone by. Now researchers are hoping to harness the pongs of the past to do just that.

Scientists, historians and experts in artificial intelligence across the UK and Europe have announced they are teaming up for a €2.8m project labelled “Odeuropa” to identify and even recreate the aromas that would have assailed noses between the 16th and early 20th centuries.
