Video conferencing, the ‘Zoom aesthetic’, the best ads of 2020, and what you need to use in 2021

Information remains a powerful weapon, even more, in the circumstances around the world these days.

AP | Portugal Tech Language Solutions' content curation not only aims to disseminate knowledge, by embracing this important role, we also take the selection of the best and most valid content in multiple areas very seriously.

The best ads of 2020

While 2020 might have felt two decades long, in terms of marketing it was actually two distinct years in one: the 2020 before the pandemic and the one after.

Along with the rest of the creative industries, the ad world has been thrown into chaos this year thanks to the arrival of the pandemic. In the wake of a series of national lockdowns across the globe, much of the early coronavirus ads were marked by sombreness and uncertainty, while production challenges and our new online lives subsequently birthed what has come to be known as the ‘Zoom aesthetic’.

Despite all of the challenges that the industry has faced in recent months, 2020 has proven that when advertising is done well it has the power to surprise, delight and inspire when people need it to the most. Here are a few ads that stood out in 2020.

This industrial revolution is a sneaky one

"This industrial revolution is a sneaky one. It’s changing absolutely every job, and we just take on new skills without realising that we’re using new technology.”, says Dr Alan Montague, a lecturer in business at RMIT.

Video conferencing has been around and in common use for decades. Thanks to the coronavirus, it has become essential.

The sneaky revolution, says Montague, is shown in the things left behind. If your employees are able to complete their work at home, and even prefer to do so, then a large inner-city office is no longer an essential part of doing business. Which means the cleaners who cleaned that office, the parking attendants, the barista making coffee in the foyer, are also no longer needed.

And for younger people entering the workforce, that’s a problem. Entry-level, unskilled work is the most at risk of being wiped out.

Which social networks should you advertise on in 2021?

Whether you use it to supplement your existing inbound marketing efforts or it makes up your entire strategy, you’ve probably used social media to meet your marketing objectives.

There are various social media platforms to choose from, and each comes with a user base that brings different advertising potential. Even though there are so many platforms, HubSpot marketing experts Kelly Hendrickson and Andrew Delaney don’t think that you should be using all of them.

When deciding which social networks to use, Delaney says, “It’s difficult to recommend one platform or another for social advertising.” It’s best to take a holistic view of your needs, what the platform has to offer and go from there.

That being said, some social networks are better equipped for meeting overall marketing needs than others, and we’ll discuss those below.

Social media tool

The world is on social media — 50% of it, at least — so if you want your product, service, and mission to reach the maximum amount of people, your business needs to be on social media, too.

However, social media can be extremely time-consuming. It also spans so many diverse tasks, ranging from data-based activities like tracking analytics, to creative jobs such as designing graphics.

Although the term "social media tool" is very general and can apply to a wide range of services, there are a few key features that your top social media tools should have.

It can be difficult to find the skills and manpower needed to execute a good social media strategy — which is why you need social media tools to help you out.

PPC is too complex, and SEO is too slow

Commonly held opposing viewpoints are: PPC is too complex, and SEO is too slow.

When these two teams collaborate, you'll be rewarded with magical insights, learnings, and results that neither team could get on its own.

These channels aren't meant to be siloed, and getting them aligned is one of the most underrated ways to improve your overall digital marketing performance. PPC is one of SEO's most powerful tools — and vice versa. Here are seven ways to thrive in both SEO and PPC.

If your SEO (search engine optimization) and PPC (pay per click) teams exist in complete silos, it's time to change that.

Last but not least

An article recommended by Mário Júnior, CEO of AP | PORTUGAL Tech Language Solutions >> Why do we have Christmas trees? It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when and where these pagan traditions morphed into the tradition as we know it: Several countries claim to be the birthplace of the Christmas tree, and there are competing mythologies that seek to explain what it all means.

But while Christmas trees appear around the world, their origins are traced to regions with abundant evergreen forests—especially those in northern Europe.
